It is 3:00 a.m. You are dreaming about a wonderful day at the beach, when you are abruptly awakened by the sound of sirens and the flashing of red lights through your window shades. You quickly run to the window, and you see CHAOS. The home across the street is engulfed in flames, with thick, black smoke pouring out of the windows and fire shooting from the rooftop. People are frantically running around in the street. Someone, it looks like a small child, is being loaded into the back of an ambulance. Firefighters are spraying water from all different directions, but it doesn’t seem to be helping.
Still in your pajamas, you run out the front door to see if you can help. Just as you emerge on the sidewalk, the house collapses with a thunderous roar. You freeze in amazement and fear, and ask yourself, “Was anyone still inside? How did the fire start? Did the smoke detectors wake everyone up? Do the batteries in MY smoke detector still work?” Suddenly you are paralyzed with the terrifying thought:
That could have happened to me!!
“I have to do something to make sure my family is protected from fire!” you say. You run inside and wake up your family.
In this WebQuest, you will explore home fire safety. Alone or with your family, you will use the internet to investigate some important issues about fire safety and preventing fires in your home. Then, you will create your own fire safety plan.
